Benefits of Hojicha

We already know hojicha is comforting: warm, toasty, and gentle on the body, but what does science actually say about its health benefits? Let's look at what recent studies reveal about this beloved roasted Japanese tea.

  1. Rich in Antioxidants, Even After Roasting
When tea leaves are roasted to make hojicha, some of the original green tea compounds (like catechins and vitamin C) naturally decrease. However, research published in Foods (2025) found that over half of of hojicha's polyphenols and a quarter of its flavonoids remain active even after digestion. That means hojicha still offers antioxidant support: it just does so in a gentler, less intense way than unroasted green tea.

  2. Calming the Mind and Reducing Fatigue
A study conducted by ITO EN and Japan's University of Occupational and Environmental Health tested how hojicha affects mental focus and stress. Participants who drank hojicha during cognitive tasks performed better and felt less fatigued than those who drank hot water and even slightly calmer than those who are standard green tea. Theis effect is linked to hojicha's low caffeine content and its lingering aroma, which stimulates the parasympathetic (rest and relax) nervous system.

  3. Supports a Happy and Healthy Heart
Hojicha's health benefits stem from its natural compounds that help keep the body and especially the circulatory system in good shape. Like gyokuro, its catechins can help maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart diseases, stroke, and arterial inflammation. On top of that, hojicha provides vitamin E, a key nutrient that supports circulation and helps prevent blood clots.

  4. Supports Healthy Digestion and Naturally Enhances Metabolism
The catechins in hojicha help stimulate metabolism, encouraging the body to burn calories more efficiently and support natural fat reduction. Rich in beneficial fibres, hojicha also aids digestion and promotes a health colon by reducing fat absorption. Emerging research on tea polyphenols in general shows they may encourage healthy gut bacteria and support fat metabolism, helping explain why many people find hojicha soothing after meals.

  5. Alleviate and Prevent Swelling Pain from Arthritis
The polyphenols in hojicha that help protect against gum inflammation may also bring relief to those arthritis. By reducing joint inflammation and helping to prevent further damage, hojicha supports overall joint health.

Scientific studies confirm what tea drinkers have long known instinctively; hojicha relaxes both body and mind. It is lower in caffeine than most teas, yet still full of beneficial antioxidants and plant compounds. While it is not a cure-all, it is a delicious and evidence-backed way to add calm and balance to your day.
