Product specificity
Ofukucha (literally, "great fortune tea") is an auspicious tea enjoyed during New Year's to pray for good health and peace.
It offers a mellow, deep flavor with a refreshing aftertaste.
This assortment includes 20g sencha tea, small pickled plums, and kombu seaweed. One bag serves five people.
Prepare the Sencha in a tea pot. Open the plum pouch and one piece of kombu in a teacup, pour the hot Sencha over them, and enjoy.
Origin of Ofukucha
In 951, when an epidemic struck Kyoto, it is said that Priest Kuya of Rokuharamitsu-ji Temple served tea, and the epidemic subsided. Later, Emperor Murakami began drinking tea at the start of the year to share in this virtue, and it came to be called Ofukucha (皇服茶 or 王服茶, literally, “tea drunk by the Emperor”).
Later on, Ofukucha came to be written with the characters for “great fortune” (大福), symbolizing its role in bringing happiness to the common people.
It spread as a New Year's custom among the populace and continues to this day. At Rokuharamitsu-ji Temple, Ofukucha is served during the first three days of the New Year.
Plum and kelp as auspicious symbols
Plum is said to eliminate the “three poisons” (food poisoning, blood poisoning, water poisoning) and has been familiar as a folk remedy.
Kelp is used with the meaning “to tie and rejoice,” making it considered very auspicious.
