Kyoto Chawan Bowl: Aohagi 青萩

Aohagi (青萩, “Blue Hagi”) is inspired by Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki), a traditional Japanese pottery that developed in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, during the Edo period. Its glaze is based on ash glaze, with added iron and copper oxide to produce a subtle bluish-green hue. Specifically, Aohagi is known for its translucent glaze and soft blue-green coloration, making it highly valued in the tea ceremony world for its alignment with the aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi (simplicity, imperfection, transience).

What is Kyoto ware?

Kyoto ware (Kyoto-yaki) refers to ceramics produced in and around Kyoto, long considered the cultural heart of Japan. Influenced by tea ceremony traditions and refined court culture, Kyoto pottery is known for its elegance, artistic expression, and meticulous craftsmanship. Rather than a single style, it represents a wide range of techniques and finishes, often combining delicate forms with carefully controlled glazes.
